Quintet, an impressive Floorstander in Klang+Ton 6/2008

The idea was to have a tall but slim floorstanding loudspeaker with enormous power handling.

According to this high demands the Visaton KE25SC ceramic dome tweeter was chosen. Originally, the AL 130 M was selected only as midrange driver; this driver's efficiency is, however, so high that four of them can be used as bass drivers.

For tweeter, midrange and the four bass drivers a 3-way crossover is being used. The bass drivers are operated in a bass reflex cabinet with two BR 25.50 bass reflex tubes.

... "From the word go the Quintet displayed an inconceivably clear and rich sound quality. And by then, the question whether the price for this speaker is justified has been answered with a resounding yes. The Quintet polishes every note till it shines, without even a trace of keeping something under wraps and represents music in many different shades. Suddenly, well know pieces of music reveal astounding differences; subtle distinctions that went unnoticed come to light. These drivers possess an outstanding ability to resolve over the entire frequency range right down to the lowest note. And even at higher volumes the sound won't become harsh. One of the reasons is obviously the enormous reserve the Quintet provides. Exceeding the limit is quite difficult and the volume has to be cranked up considerably. At any level even the lowest bass remained tight and mighty. Depending on speaker positioning the bass might become too much; in this case it is recommended to plug up one or both reflex ports. The Quintet's tremendous openness is furthered by the pure and slightly reserved sound characteristic, producing an almost unequalled airiness and detachment from the physical cabinets. The bass, however, is always present, lending an authority to the sound that one wouldn't expect from this column. And that's exactly what was intended by designing this speaker. The Quintet's looks, pleasing even the fairer sex don't require any concession to sound and musicality - both camps are served with perfection."

Our Quintet kit with high-end crossover

If you prefer to use higher quality components for the crossover we recommend to replace the non-etched ELCO's with MKP capacitors and to use two Mundorf MCAP Supreme in the signal path to the dome tweeter. In the signal path to both the midrange driver and tweeter we recommend baked varnish coils. R2 and L2 should be replaced with a larger core coil (in series, therefore, R2 with 3.3 Ohm).
